What Is a Personal Loan EMI?

A personal loan EMI, or Equated Monthly Instalment, is the regular amount a borrower pays towards a personal loan. For a standard reducing-balance loan, each EMI includes a portion of principal and interest.

The EMI is influenced by three primary variables: the loan amount, the interest rate and the repayment tenure. Increasing the loan amount generally increases the EMI. A higher interest rate generally increases both the EMI and the overall interest cost.

Tenure has an important trade-off. Extending the tenure can reduce the monthly EMI, but the loan remains outstanding for longer and can result in more total interest. A shorter tenure can increase the monthly payment while potentially reducing cumulative interest.

Don't compare personal loans using EMI alone.

A lower EMI can simply reflect a longer tenure. Compare the total repayment, interest cost, fees and repayment conditions alongside the monthly instalment.

How EMI Is Calculated

Personal Loan EMI Formula Explained

For a standard reducing-balance loan, the EMI calculation uses the principal, periodic interest rate and total number of repayment periods.

The Standard EMI Formula

The commonly used formula for a reducing-balance loan is:

EMI = P × r × (1+r)ⁿ ÷ ((1+r)ⁿ − 1)

Here, P is the principal loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate expressed as a decimal and n is the total number of monthly instalments.

Illustrative Example

For an illustrative ₹5 lakh personal loan at 12% annual interest for 5 years, the estimated EMI is approximately:

₹11,122
Illustrative calculation only. Actual lender rates, fees, repayment structures and final EMI may differ.
What Your EMI Shows

Principal, Interest & Total Repayment

Understanding the three main numbers helps you see the real cost of a personal loan rather than focusing only on the monthly EMI.

₹

Principal

Principal is the amount borrowed from the lender. It is the starting balance on which interest is calculated under the applicable repayment method.

%

Total Interest

Total interest is the cumulative interest paid over the loan tenure. A higher rate or longer tenure can increase the overall interest cost.

Σ

Total Repayment

Total repayment broadly combines the principal and interest payable through the scheduled EMIs, before considering applicable separate charges.

Tenure Comparison

How Loan Tenure Changes Your EMI

Tenure creates a trade-off between monthly affordability and total interest. The best tenure is not necessarily the shortest or longest one; it depends on your cash flow and borrowing cost.

TenureTypical Effect on EMITypical Effect on InterestWhat to Consider
Shorter TenureHigher monthly EMIPotentially lower total interestRequires stronger monthly cash flow.
Medium TenureModerate EMIModerate total interestCan balance monthly affordability and cost.
Longer TenureLower monthly EMIPotentially higher total interestCan improve monthly cash flow but increases repayment period.
Before You Borrow

6 Things to Check Before Taking a Personal Loan

A personal loan is usually unsecured, so lenders may assess income, credit history, existing obligations and other eligibility factors. Compare the complete borrowing cost before applying.

01

Interest Rate

Check the applicable rate and understand whether it is fixed or subject to the product's stated terms.

02

Total Repayment

Calculate the total amount payable over the tenure instead of comparing only the monthly EMI.

03

Processing Charges

Review processing, documentation and other applicable charges that can increase the overall borrowing cost.

04

Prepayment Terms

Understand the applicable conditions and charges if you plan to repay the loan early.

05

Credit Profile

Review your existing credit obligations and repayment history before taking on additional debt.

06

EMI Affordability

Make sure the proposed EMI fits comfortably alongside essential expenses, existing debt and an emergency buffer.

Loan Decision

When Can a Personal Loan Make Sense?

A personal loan may provide access to funds without pledging an asset, but whether it is appropriate depends on the purpose, cost and repayment capacity.

Potentially Useful For

✓Eligible planned expenses where repayment capacity is clear.
✓Situations where an unsecured structure is relevant.
✓Consolidating certain higher-cost obligations when the overall cost genuinely improves.
✓Planned financial needs with a defined repayment strategy.

Things to Be Careful About

✓Borrowing for recurring lifestyle expenses without a repayment plan.
✓Taking a larger loan simply because the lender offers a higher limit.
✓Ignoring fees or comparing offers only by advertised interest rate.
✓Adding another EMI when existing debt already strains monthly cash flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common questions about personal loan EMI, interest, tenure and repayment.

For a standard reducing-balance personal loan, EMI is calculated using the loan principal, periodic interest rate and total number of monthly instalments. The formula produces a regular payment amount that combines principal and interest over the scheduled tenure.

Generally, extending the repayment tenure can reduce the monthly EMI because the repayment is spread across more instalments. However, the loan remains outstanding longer, so the total interest paid can increase. Compare both EMI and total repayment before choosing a tenure.

EMI is the regular monthly repayment amount. Total interest is the cumulative interest component paid over the entire loan tenure. A loan can have an affordable EMI but still cost more overall if the repayment period is significantly longer.

Compare the interest rate, EMI, total repayment, processing and other applicable charges, tenure, prepayment conditions, late-payment consequences and lender eligibility requirements. Your existing debt and monthly cash flow should also be considered before taking additional borrowing.

The calculator provides a mathematical estimate based on the loan amount, interest rate and tenure entered. The actual EMI and total borrowing cost can differ because lenders may apply different rates, fees, repayment structures or other charges. Always verify the final loan offer.
