Keep your relevant records organised before entering information into your return.
What documents are needed for ITR filing?
The documents you need for an Income Tax Return depend on your income sources, deductions, investments, property, capital gains and the ITR form you are filing.
For a salaried taxpayer, Form 16, Form 16A where applicable, Form 26AS, AIS, payslips and bank statements can be important records. Other documents may become relevant if you claim deductions, have rental income, earn capital gains or have income from business or profession.
ITRs are generally annexure-less, which means you normally do not attach investment proofs, TDS certificates or other supporting documents to the return itself. However, you should keep relevant records safely because they may be required later for verification, assessment or other tax requirements.
ITR filing documents checklist
Start with these core document categories and then add records according to your income sources and deductions.
Form 16
Form 16 is a key salary-related tax document issued by an employer. It can help you review salary income and TDS information while preparing your return.
Form 16A
Form 16A can be relevant when TDS is deducted on certain non-salary income such as interest, subject to the applicable transaction.
Form 26AS
Review Form 26AS to check available tax deducted, collected and other relevant tax information reflected against your PAN.
Annual Information Statement
AIS provides broader reported information that can help taxpayers review TDS, TCS, specified financial transactions, tax payments and other available information.
Bank Statements
Bank statements can help identify interest income, transactions and other information that may need to be considered while preparing your return.
Investment Records
Keep relevant investment and premium-payment receipts where they are needed to support deductions or other information reported in the return.
Documents can change with your ITR form
There is no single document list that applies to every taxpayer. The records required depend on your income profile and the ITR form you need to file.
Form 16, AIS, Form 26AS, bank statements and applicable deduction records may be relevant.
You may need capital-gain statements, bank records, house-property details, rent information and interest certificates where applicable.
Additional business or professional income records and financial information may be required depending on your circumstances.
Relevant income, tax and supporting records should be kept ready according to the applicable presumptive-taxation provisions.
Extra records you may need
Your document checklist becomes more specific when you have multiple income sources or claim particular deductions.
Employment Income
Form 16, payslips and employer-provided tax information can help you reconcile salary and TDS details.
House Property
Keep rent information, property-related tax details and home-loan interest certificates where applicable.
Capital Gains
For shares, securities or other capital assets, keep transaction statements and relevant purchase or sale information.
Interest & Other Income
Bank statements, fixed-deposit records and Form 16A can help identify interest income and related TDS information.
