Understand Form 16
Form 16 is an important salary TDS certificate that helps you understand your salary income, applicable deductions or exemptions and tax deducted by your employer. Learn what Form 16 contains, how Part A and Part B work, and how to use the information while preparing your ITR.
What is Form 16?
Form 16 is a certificate of tax deducted at source on salary. The Income Tax Department describes it as a certificate issued by an employer to an employee at the end of the financial year.
It provides important information about the employee's salary, deductions or exemptions and tax deducted at source. This information can be useful when computing the tax payable or refundable and when preparing an Income Tax Return.
For salaried taxpayers, Form 16 is therefore more than a document to store after receiving it. It can be used as a reference for checking salary figures, TDS credits and other tax-related information before submitting an ITR.
Employer → Employee
Form 16 is issued by the employer to the employee and contains the information required for understanding salary income and TDS.
Form 16 Part A vs Part B
Form 16 has two important sections. Understanding the difference makes it easier to cross-check your TDS and salary information before filing your Income Tax Return.
Part A
Part A focuses on tax deduction and deposit information. It helps connect the TDS deducted from salary with the tax deposited and the relevant deductor and taxpayer details.
Part B
Part B contains salary and income-related details used for understanding the calculation of taxable income. It can include salary components, deductions, exemptions and tax-related calculations.
What should you check in Form 16?
Before using Form 16 while filing your ITR, review the key personal, salary and TDS details carefully. Small differences can create reconciliation issues later.
PAN and employer details
Check the employee PAN, employer details and other identification information shown on the certificate. Correct identification is important when matching tax records.
Salary information
Review the salary figures and relevant salary components shown in Part B. Compare them with your salary slips and annual compensation records.
Deductions and exemptions
Check the deductions and exemptions considered for tax computation. If something appears different from what you submitted to your employer, investigate the difference before filing.
TDS deducted
Review the tax deducted from your salary and compare it with the available tax-credit information. This can help identify discrepancies before you submit the ITR.
How Form 16 helps with ITR filing
Form 16 provides salary and TDS information that can help salaried taxpayers prepare and cross-check their Income Tax Return. It should be used as a reference alongside other relevant tax records.
