80D Explained

What is Section 80D?

Section 80D provides a deduction for eligible payments towards health insurance premiums and preventive health check-ups.

The deduction can apply to premiums paid for yourself, your spouse, dependent children and parents, with higher limits where the relevant insured person is a senior citizen.

Eligible senior citizens may also claim a deduction for specified medical expenditure where health insurance coverage is not available, subject to the applicable conditions.

HEALTH + TAX PLANNING

Protect your family while understanding your eligible deduction.

80D is different from investment-based deductions because it focuses primarily on qualifying health insurance premiums, preventive health check-ups and certain senior-citizen medical expenses.

Deduction Limits

How much can you claim under 80D?

The available deduction depends on who is covered and whether the relevant person is a senior citizen.

SELF
SELF / SPOUSE / DEPENDENT CHILDREN ₹25,000

Standard deduction

The limit can increase to ₹50,000 if the relevant insured person is a senior citizen.

PAR
PARENTS ₹25,000

Parents' health cover

The parents' limit can increase to ₹50,000 where the relevant parent is a senior citizen.

60+
SENIOR CITIZEN MEDICAL EXPENSE ₹50,000

Eligible medical expenditure

Eligible medical expenditure for a senior citizen can qualify where no health insurance premium is paid for that coverage, subject to the applicable rules.

Understand The Structure

Your 80D deduction depends on the people covered.

The self/family and parent-related deductions are considered separately within the applicable rules. Senior-citizen status can increase the relevant limit.

Preventive Health Check-up

₹5,000 check-up benefit is included in the overall limit.

Preventive health check-up expenses can qualify for deduction up to ₹5,000. However, this amount is included within the applicable Section 80D limit rather than being available as an additional deduction.

Example: if the applicable overall limit is ₹25,000, a qualifying ₹5,000 preventive check-up forms part of that ₹25,000 limit.
Senior Citizens

Higher 80D limits for senior citizens

Senior-citizen status can materially change the applicable deduction limit under Section 80D.

HEALTH INSURANCE

Premium paid for senior citizens

Where the relevant insured person is a senior citizen, the applicable Section 80D limit can be ₹50,000 instead of ₹25,000.

Higher deduction limit
Applies to qualifying health insurance payments
Conditions and eligibility still apply
MEDICAL EXPENSE

Senior-citizen medical expenditure

Where no premium is paid for health insurance coverage, eligible medical expenditure incurred for a senior citizen can qualify for deduction up to ₹50,000.

Why It Matters

Why understand Section 80D?

Section 80D connects health protection with tax planning, but the deduction should not be the only reason to purchase insurance.

TAX

Reduce taxable income

Eligible health-insurance payments can reduce taxable income when the deduction is available under the applicable regime.

HEALTH

Support health protection

Health insurance can provide financial protection against unexpected medical costs.

FAMILY

Cover family members

The deduction structure can include qualifying payments for spouse, dependent children and parents.

PLAN

Improve tax planning

Knowing your applicable limit helps you maintain records and prepare your ITR accurately.

Avoid Errors

Common Section 80D mistakes

Avoid these common errors when calculating or claiming your health-insurance tax deduction.

01

Treating ₹5,000 as an extra deduction

The preventive health check-up amount is included within the applicable overall 80D limit.

02

Ignoring senior-citizen status

The applicable limit can be higher where the relevant insured person is a senior citizen.

03

Mixing parent and self limits

Self/family and parent-related deductions need to be considered under their respective applicable limits.

04

Not checking tax-regime eligibility

Most Chapter VI-A deductions are not available under the new tax regime, so verify the regime applicable to your return.

05

Losing insurance records

Keep policy numbers, insurer details, premium records and supporting documents available.

06

Buying insurance only for tax saving

Health coverage should primarily be selected according to your protection needs, coverage and financial situation.
